Introduction
Agility
is a sport where dogs climb obstacles, fly over jumps and zip through tunnels.
Above all it is FUN! The sport started in England and it is based on the
Equstrian Show Jumping. It was used as a fun outlet during breaks
at the prestigious CRUFTS dog show
in England. Since then the sport has evolved in a fast paced and wild sport
that has come to take over dog sports!
In America, the sport was started by Kenneth Tatsch of Texas, who went
to Crufts in 1985 and saw agility and started one of the largest US Agility
organizations: the United States Dog Agility Association (USDAA). Since
then, many other organizations have leapt to provide competitions for many
dogs and handlers. (See Below: Organizations).
Agility, is growing in leaps and bounds all across the world with many
national organizations now offering it as part of their dog sports. How
about giving it a try?
Organizations
There
are 4 MAIN organizations that provide agility competitions for competitors.
American Kennel Club (AKC), United Kennel Club (UKC), North American Dog
Agility Club/Australian Sheperd Club (NADAC & ASCA), and the United
States Dog Agility Association (USDAA)
American
Kennel Club
The
American
Kennel Club (AKC) started offering Agility in 1995. Since its introduction,
the sport has grown enormously! The AKC divides classes by height &
experience.

Standard
Classes
The standard classes are Novice, Open, and Exellence and cosist of all
the regular equiptment, including, in Open and Exellence, the weave poles.
A qualifying score is a score of 85 out of 100 points possible. When you
qualify 3 times under 3 different judges you will earn a title. So if your
dog is in Novice A and you qualify for your third time you now have
the title NOVICE AGILITY (NA) to put after your dogs name.
To earn the OA & AX you need to qualify 3 times under 3 different judges
in Open (for the OA) and Exellence (for the AX). To achieve the MX, you
need to qualify 10 times in the Agility Exellence Class.
Jumpers
with Weaves Classes
The
Jumpers with Weaves classes (JWW for short) is just that, a course full
of jumps, tunnels, and a short set of weaves. Even in NOVICE there are
weave poles (normally 6 poles) so if your dog dosen't know the weave poles
yet, do not enter this class! It is built for speed.
The Novice title is Novice Agility Jumpers (NAJ) and like in standard runs,
it takes 3 Qualifying scores under 3 different judges to get the title.
The same is true with the Open title, Open Agility Jumpers (OAJ) and the
Exellence Title, Agility Exellence Jumpers (AXJ) and the Master Agility
Jumpers (MXJ).
United
Kennel Club
The
United
Kennel Club's style of agility is all about control. Not only are the
jump heights lower than most organizations, but the standard course times
(STC) are slower too.

Explained
To get the U-AG1 after your dogs name, your dog needs to qualify 3 times
with no NONQUALIFYING faults and with a score of 170 or better.
To attain the U-AGII title, he must qualify 3 times in the Agility 2 class
and also attain atleast a score of 170 or better.
The elusive U-ATCH is attained by getting very high scores in the
Agility 1 & 2 classes, with a total of 100 points needed. A clean run
is worth 10 points towards the U-ATCH. Anything below a score of 196 does
not recieve points towards the title.
The U-ATCHX (Agility Trial Champion Exellence) by attaining 3 qualifying
scores in the Agility 3 class.

Titles
Explained
To
get the Agility Dog title (AD) your dog will have to earn three legs under
two different judges by have a clean (no faults at all) run
on a Novice and/or Starters course.
The Advance Agility Dog (ADD) will be awarded when your dog has completed
3 clean runs under 2 different judges in the Advance Class.
The Master Class combines the 'standard' classes to the 'game' classes.
For your dog to be known as "MAD" he must have a clean run three times
in the Masters class AND complete a qualifying score in Gamblers,
Relay, Jumpers, and Snooker classes.
The Agility Dog Champion is completed when your dog attains the Master
Agility Dog Title, the Gamblers Master Title, the Jumpers Masters Title,
the Snookers Masters Title and the Relay Masters title. This title is quite
the accomplishment!
The Veteran classes are for dogs that are over 7 years of age.
Junior
Handler Classes
The
Junior Handler classes are for juniors under 18 years of age. Jump heights
are lower than in the standard class and the STC is slower.
JH Elementary Program: To earn the Beginner title, the dog must complete
the Beginner course with a clean run. In the Beginner round only, the dog
can be on lead. Courses are normally in a "S" shape or Horseshoe design.
For the the Beginner Certificate you only need to complete one clean run.
