Blacfriar Hellzapoppin': "Louis" owned by Melissa & Paul Kirchofer. Best of Winners at the Bloominton IL KC-Handled by Courtney.

In the conformation classes, dogs are judged on their looks. Each breed, has an AKC standard. The standard is like a blueprint of what the perfect specimen of that breed would look like. The standard details each part of the dog from head to tail, and helps explain that if you have an Irish Setter the coat should be red or mahoghany. Each dog in a conformation class (execpt dogs already champions) are competing for Championship points. It takes 15 points for a dog to become a Champion. In a conformation class the sexes are divided.

The classes (in order) go like this:

Puppy 6-9 month Dogs

Puppy 9-12 moths Dogs

12-18 month Dogs

Novice Dogs

American Bred Dog

Open dog &

Puppy 6-9 month bitches

How the conformation ring works:
First, all dog classes are judged first, then the bitch classes. Let's make believe you have a Gordon Setter. You get a show catalog which is a booklet of every entry in the show and all of the judges. Gordon Setters are on page 29. You turn to this page and see the breakdown of classes.

The male {dog} classes are judged first in order of the catalog. The 2 dogs in the 9-12 month class is judged first, and a winner is chosen. Then a winner from the 12-18. Assuming the dog in the american Bred is good enough, he is the winner of that class. And 1 out of the 10 males of the open class is choosen as the winner.

All of the winners come in for the winners class. 1 dog is named Winner's Dog. This dog takes home the Championship points. After that a Reserve Winners's Dog is choosen, incase something is found on the Winners dog that would disqualify him, the points are automatically given to the Reserve Winner.

The same procedure is followed for the bitches {female} classes and a Winners Bitch and Reserve Winners Bitch is chosen.

Now comes the Best of Breed Class. These are all the Champion Gorden Setters entered for that day. You will see that the Winners Dog & Winners Bitch is also in the ring. Why is this? The WD & WB is the best dog and bitch for the day. The are the undeafted dog and bitch for that show, so they too get compete for the award of Best of Breed. Also, out of the WD & WB a Best of Winners is chosen out of the two. When Best of Breed is chosen a Best of Opposite Sex is chosen. Assuming that BOB goes to a dog, a bitch will be given Best of Opposite sex.

In each class ribbons and sometimes prizes go to 1st thru 4th place in each class. Again, the 1st place is the ONLY one to go onto the winners, but 2nd place should stick around should the 1st place in your class take winners.

After each Best of Breed is chosen, the Groups come next. Each Best of Breed winner goes into it specified group to become the top winner in that group.
The groups are:
Sporting Group: Retrievers, Spaniels, Pointers, Weimaraners, Setters, Viszlas, etc.
