| Looking for meaning in the most ingenious communicative medium designed by man, quite a lot of my energy is devoted to language, spoken as well as written, and the endeavour to decipher what is behind its multifarious forms, what they express. Some related yet rather random notes are deposited on the Word page -which, I feel compelled to stress, has absolutely nothing to do with a certain software. |

| Last not least, I'm offering some translations here, stories written by Chinese sages, thinkers, literati. On one hand, they document a culture which has been almost destroyed by the events of the last hundred years filled with the mindlessness of armies and politicians, "capitalist" and "communist". Finally one sentence or two concerning the name of this site - "Awakening Academe." Yes, I am working in an academic environment and I strongly believe in the merits of scholarly pursuit if it is engaged in for the sake of the advancement not of the individual's social standing or financial income but of the character, knowledge, and well-being of everybody involved. Admittedly, the reality of the academic world can look rather different. The same thing happens in many religious circles where noble teachings stand in stark contrast to the utter confusion reigning among the faithful. But as we cannot blame a valid doctrine for the faults of the follower, I feel we should not deprecate academic endeavour just because of occasional (or even rampant) misuse. I prefer the opposite, if possible -to improve a situation by active involvement- since even in failure, there will be no regrets. Thus the name. |
