Zixia went to see Zengzi. "How does it come that you have been putting on weight?" asked Zengzi. Zixia answered: "Because of a victory." "What victory?" wondered Zengzi, and Zixia explained: "When I entered my home and faced the righteousness of the kings of yore I used to deem that very important, but when going out and seeing the pleasures of the rich I began to regarded those as something to be proud of. These two attitudes were fighting in my bosom. While the battle was raging I grew thin. Now the righteousness of the kings of yore has won and I have been putting on weight." Han Feizi |

In this anecdotal conversation between Zixia and Zengzi, two disciples of Confucius, Han Feizi touches upon a number of interesting topics -the influence the environment has on our attitudes, the inner clash of values described as a battle, the close relationship between mental state and physical well-being, and last not least the power of observation registering the events in the inner world and the insight perceiving cause and effect. |
