Vandalism on art. Its reasons and stimulus. The damage of picture Rembrandt's "Danae" on the 15th of June 1985.
Why have I chose this theme for research?
The reasons are such:
Rembrandt is my favorite artist, even I may say Rembrandt was my teacher in some periods of my creative way and even I may say Rembrandt was more true teacher than professors of art academy.
The vandal who damaged the "Danae" using knife and sulfuric acid (oil of vitriol) on 15th of June 1985 was some Lithuanian man Bronius Maigis. My origin also Lithuanian. That is why this case is so sore and important for me personally.
After court's indictment on the August of 1985 the case of Maigis was set for safety's sake, because security organs (KGB) feared that other crazy men can repeat this same with other masterpieces and other objects. Thus first I heard about Maigis's attack only in 1997 and just recently I have elucidated its details which shocked me.
After concealment of the case of Maigis in 1985 in Lithuania some pressure against alone persons was begun, at least intensification of clout against me was clear perceptible. Some my own pictures were stolen ("Two Drinkers", painted in 1988, stolen in 1990), some damaged ("Wagons of Builders", painted in 1978). Besides that ten days before "Danae's" back on public display in the October 1997 some attempt on my life was made. Luckily the injure was not serious enough, and I have forgiven their sin.
Some popular sayings, like "Rembrandt is not good enough painter", The "Danae" is indecent picture", survive among some prudes from 1985 till now.
Maigis's vandalism was not only Lithuanian phenomenon, vandalism on art occurs throughout world. It means this problem is relevant universally.
Therefore I decided to do some research on this theme and to elucidate following questions:
