~ ANGEL ON HIS SHOULDER ~

With an angel on his shoulder,

he takes a moment, bows his head in prayer.

Seeking comfort for the pilgrimage of sadness,

for his many comrades left still lying there.

~~

Through the ruins cloud filled dust,

such complex emotions swelling within his heart.

Painting a thousand pictures of lost loved ones,

unsure now where one ends and another starts.

~~

One single moment in time,

his world is swept away and nothing is the same.

Tags hang on mirrors of those that failed to return,

carefully written in history each and every name.

~~

Weary from exhaustion,

in the quiet, his tender soul reflection remembers.

Time spent in caring for others with compassion,

gentle tears that flow like rain from fallen embers.

~~

No changing that which is over,

as the night drifting into dawn was leaving,

Moving forward a long way from the singed view,

heartache blended in fine threads of weaving.

~~

He will stand and salute,

taps playing the final alarm, a mournful sound.

Sighs heard in breathless soft whispers cry,

at a place of rest, where heroes lay in the ground.

The 'Final Alarm' has sounded for the Firefighters of FDNY killed in the line of duty as a result of 9-11.

The following is a quote from a thirty year veteran Firefighter/Paramedic, very close to my own heart. When recently asked, does the fire speak to you.

"It lives....It breathes.... It blows down your neck to let you know its alive. It whispers in the dark, as it crackles and pops in the embers. It roars in the daylight as it soars high to compare it's power to the sun".

Sgt. Firefighter/Paramedic John W. Raborn III

Someone recently emailed me and asked what was meant by tags left hanging on mirrors. When a Firefighter responds to a fire call regardless of what type of unit they exit from, rather it is the Engine, Tack Unit, Ladder Unit, Rescue Unit, Search and Rescue Operations Unit, they wear two ID tags. One stays on their persons the other is hung on the mirror of whatever unit they were asigned to. It is another way for 'Instant Command' at ground zero to account for those Firefighters who fail to return out of the fire and smoke.
