Angel the Series
In the beginning, before man or animal or demon, there came into
existence, the first form of evil. A noncoporeal entity, The
First Evil has survived throughout history, using its ability
to alter its form and create illusions to manipulate and torture
others to do its bidding. When Buffy was forced to send Angel,
the man that she loved, to Hell in order to save the world, she
was unable to live with herself. Over time, however, she found
it easier to deal with what she had done. Just as she was on
the verge of forgiving herself, Angel returned from Hell by an
unknown force. It was the First Evil who had brought the vampire
back into Buffy's life for its own personal means. Leading
a group of demon high priest known as Harbingers (or Bringers),
the First manipulated Angel without him even realizing it.
Adopting
the appearances of those that Angel had killed as Angelus, The
First Evil began torturing him emotionally. The First tried
convincing Angel to give into his demonic urges, to give into
his lust for Buffy. Ultimately, the First was trying to convince
him to give up his soul and return to the monster he once was.
When Angel refused, the First Evil compromised by convincing him
to end his own life. Agreeing, Angel stood atop a hill awaiting
for the sun to rise and destroy him. Buffy eventually learned
of the First Evil and its plot against Angel. Defeating the
First's Harbingers, Buffy faced down the great evil which was in
the form of Jenny Calendar. The First told Buffy that Angel would
die and then vanished. By some miracle, snow fell over Sunnydale
that morning, preventing the sun's rays from shinging down. Angel
was allowed to continue his destiny and the First was never heard
from again. Until now.
The First Evil and its Harbingers are back and have been causing
all sorts of trouble for Buffy and the Scooby Gang. Using its
manipulations once again for its own personal gain, the First
has tricked and used the newly souled Spike, as well as Jonathan
and Andrew. It appeared to Willow claiming to be speaking on
behalf of Tara. It's goal? So far remains to be seen. Spike,
who has been most affected by the First's evil plot, has been
denied control of himself. Using the old folk song "Early One
Morning" as a hypnotic trigger to make Spike a mindless soldier,
the First has had him killing again. Not only that, the First
has had him siring other vampires for some unknown purpose.
Andrew Wells has been following the First who
has appeared in the guise of Warren
Mears, his former partner in crime. Leading Andrew to the
Hellmouth, the First has had him dig up the seal of Danthazar
which lies in the basement of the newly rebuilt Sunnydale High.
The First as Warren has successfully gotten Andrew to murder
Jonathan, using his blood to open the seal. Unfortunately,
the anemic Jonathan's blood was unable to open the seal and so
the blood of another had to be used. Unable to kill again, not
even to slaughter a pig, Andrew resorted to getting the necessary
blood from a butcher shop. It was here that he ran into Willow,
who was also retrieving blood for Spike, who Buffy was keeping
tied up in her home to discover why he's been feeding again.
Taking Andrew back to the Summers' home, Willow and the others
tried to get information out of him. The First, not wanting
Andrew to reveal its plan, used its "sleeper" agent Spike to
attack Andrew. With Buffy's prevention, Andrew's life was spared
and Spike was chained up in the basement. The First immediately
dispatched its Harbingers to attack the Summers home and retrieve
Spike, taking him to the seal of Danthazar and using his blood to
open it. Out from the seal arose a hellish beast of a vampire,
too demonic to be a normal human hybrid. It appeared to be a "pure"
vampire.
Buffy now knows what she has been dealing with and must figure out a way to stop the First Evil. The Watcher's Council, well aware of what is going on, is being attacked by the First also. Several of their operatives have been getting killed, declaring war on the Council. Believing as they always have that they were in control of the situation, the unsuspecting Council came to a grisly end when their headquarters was blown up just as they were about to leave to Sunnydale. Now it seems the only one who can help Buffy is Giles who was unfortunately attacked by one of the First's Harbingers just as a fellow Watcher told him to "gather them". Whether or not he is still alive remains to be seen.
This Season On Angel The Series:
Angel, bound and locked in a box by his own son, spent months on the ocean floor. Cordelia, who had been asked to ascend to a heavenly plane as a higher being, watched from above as Angel suffered from hallucinations while in the depths of the sea. Gunn and Fred, who had no idea what had happened to Angel or Cordy, found themselves trying to run Angel Investigations on their own. Lorne, who had gone to Vegas to start his singing career was unreachable, and Connor played the innocent and remained at the Hyperion. Of all people, it was Wesley who finally found Angel and brought him home. Even after his friends abandoned him, Wesley was still doing what was right. Wesley replenished Angel with his own blood and brought him to the Hyperion, where the truth about Connor was revealed. Angel told Connor that he hoped one day they'd be able to fight side by side, but until that day he wanted him out of his hotel. Connor left, forced to live on the streets of a world he didn't fully understand. Angel immediately began his search for Cordy, using an ancient mystical relic to locate her. Finding out that she was now a higher being, Angel laid the matter to rest, believing she was where she was supposed to be.
Angel, Gunn, and Fred then went to Las Vegas to meet with Lorne. They came to find that Lorne was being held captive by a greedy casino owner who was using the Pylean demon to read the destinies of Vegas guests in order to steal them. Angel and Co. rescued Lorne and foiled the casino owner's evil plot, with a little help from Cordelia. Upon their return to Los Angeles, Angel and the gang came to find Cordelia, back from her heavenly dimension. Unfortunately, she had no memory of anything and there was no explanation as to why she had returned. Luckily, Lorne came across a spell that would return her memory but it didn't come without its complications. Nevertheless, Cordelia's memory was returned and with it came a startling vision of a Beast that would rise and bring destruction to Earth. Cordelia told Angel that she loved him but that the could not be together....not yet anyway.
Meanwhile, Gunn and Fred's relationship was suffering from its own problems. After learning that it was her professor who had sent her to the library to read the book that trapped her in Pylea for five years, she went after him in a rage of vengeance. Fueled by anger, Fred vowed to kill the man who sent her to Hell. Gunn tried to convince her not to but she would not listen and asked Wesley to help her. Wesley gave Fred an incantation that opened a portal to an even more horrible Hell dimension than Pylea. Fred confronted her professor and opened the portal. Gunn, wanting to preserve Fred's innocence killed the man himself and dropped the body through the portal. This caused a rift between the two of them.
Despite all this, something still had to be done about the Beast that Cordelia had foreseen would come. Angel sought information from the enemy Wolfram and Hart, who themselves were displeased that their own planned apocalypse was being threatened. Cordelia, feeling useless, went with Connor to where the Beast would rise in hopes of finding a way to stop it. Of all places the Beast appeared through the ground at the spot where Connor had been born. The Beast was about to attack Cordelia when Connor commanded it to stop. The Beast obeyed and fled leaving Connor to believe if there was a connection between the two of them. Meanwhile Angel, Wesley, Lorne, and Gunn set out to do battle with the Beast to prevent it from performing a ritual that would bring destruction down on the Earth. Unfortunately, they were unable to defeat the Beast and before it brought down a rain of fire over Los Angeles, asked Angel "Do you really think she's safe with him?". Meanwhile, Cordelia came to believe that the world really was coming to an end. Her sympathy towards Connor, having made a connection with him when she cleansed his soul after his return from the Quortoth and seeing how he had lived there, gave her the need to offer him a chance of intimacy with another human being for the first time. Unfortunately, Angel arrived to see the woman he loved in the sexual embrace of his own son.
In a time before man came into existence, the world was ruled by demons. Now known as "The Old Ones", these unholy creatures roamed the Earth until the day they were banished from this realm and mortal animals were allowed to evolve and flourish. The demons were forced to find homes in other various dimensions where demons ruled. These realms came to be known as Hell dimensions. Some demons remained on Earth, but were forced to assimilate and breed with the human race in order to stay. Though not as powerful as they once were as "pure" demons, the hybrids and demons forced to adapt made it their goal to rid the Earth realm of the human disease and reclaim it as their own. Probably the greatest threat to the humans was the vampire, a demon that infected humans like a plague. To keep the vampires from wiping out the human race, the elders of several villages came together and decided it was time to fight back.
The humans gathered the darkest and most powerful magicks and created a power that was channeled into a young girl. The dark power gave the girl strength and abilities beyond normal humans and she was used as their weapon to fight against the vampires and any other demons that would pose a threat to the evolution of man. She was the Slayer. She would fight against the demons until she could no longer, until she died. The dark power that fueled her would flourish, however, manifesting itself in another girl who would carry on the legacy of the Slayer. And so, this would continue throughout the centuries. For every generation there would be a Chosen One, a girl bestowed with the ancient dark power to fight the demons and preserve mankind. The descendents of those that created the Slayer would come to form the Watcher's Council. It would be their duty to monitor all demonic activity throughout the world, as well as seek out all girls who have the potential of becoming the next Slayer and train them so that they were ready to go into battle as soon as they were called.
Buffy Anne Summers lead a picture perfect life in Los Angeles as the most popular girl at Hemery High, though all that changed when a mysterious man named Merrick came to her with a message. She was the Chosen One. Called at fifteen, Buffy would find herself abandoning her prom queen status to live the life of a Slayer. Though she was discovered late in life, it was Merrick's duty as her Watcher to train her to fight against the vampires and demons of the world. She found herself growing to become a great warrior but, unfortunately, she was unable to prevent Merrick's death at the hands of the vampire Lothos. The death of her Watcher only gave her more reason to take up her role as the Slayer, however, and she faced down and killed Lothos. She disposed of his vampire minions as well, reducing them to ash by trapping them in the school gym and burning it down. Unfortunately, there was no way she could tell anyone, even her parents, what really happened and her seemingly bizarre behavior caused great damage to her family life. Her parents soon separated and Buffy was kicked out of Hemery High. Buffy and her mother moved to the small California town of Sunnydale, hoping to start over. Wanting just to be normal again, Buffy was more than happy to forget all about vampires and her role as the Slayer. Unfortunately, she would come to find that being the Slayer is a life long job.
Buffy soon met Rupert Giles, the high school librarian, who claimed to have been sent by the Watcher's Council to replace Merrick and continue her training. She was relunctant but soon came to face her destiny as the Slayer. With Giles as her guide she came to fight not only vampires but various other Earthbound demons. For Sunnydale rested on a Hellmouth, a gateway into a horrific parallel dimension where demons ruled. It would become Buffy's mission to prevent the opening of the Hellmouth, as well as other gateways into various other hell dimensions. Buffy would also come to meet a variety of allies who would help her in her cause. This included Angel, a vampire who had been cursed with a soul. She came to fall in love with Angel but unfortunately, their love could never be.
Angel: The Vampire With a Soul
Born in 1727, Liam of Galway came to be known as an irresponsible drunk who lusted and sinned. His behavior came from his rebellion against his father who raised him to believe he was a sinner and that his bad behavior would lead him to an eternity in Hell. In 1953, Liam met a woman named Darla who was in actuality a vampire. She sired Liam and he became the most vicious vampire that walked the Earth. He adopted the name Angelus, the vampire with the face of an Angel. Unlike most vampires, who killed to feed, Angelus killed and tortured for sheer pleasure. Victims of his reign of terror included a man named Daniel Holtz. Angelus murdered his wife and baby and turned his daughter into a vampire so Holtz would have to kill her himself. Holtz vowed vengeance and spent the remainder of his life hunting Angelus down. Another victim of Angelus was a young girl named Drusilla. While feeding on a priest in a confessional booth, Angelus met Drusilla when she came to him confessing her sins. Drusilla had the ability to see into the future and feared that her gift was sinful. Thanks to Angelus' cold manipulations, Drusilla came to truly believe she was evil because of her precognitive abilities. To further matters, Angelus slaughtered her family and drove her insane before turning her into a vampire so her insanity could last for an eternity.
In 1898, Angelus fed on a gypsy girl, unaware that he would have to pay the ultimate price. The elders of the Romany gypsies placed a curse on Angelus, restoring his soul. They did this so that he would once again have a conscience and feel remorse for his actions. They expected him to forever walk the Earth tortured by guilt. And should he experience a moment of true happiness, a moment where he temporarily forgot who and what he was and what he had done, he would lose his soul. No longer a man or monster, Angelus became known as Angel, a vampire who lived in self exhile from the rest of the world.
It wasn't until 1996, while living on the streets of Manhattan, that Angel came to meet Whistler, a demon who tried convincing the vampire with a soul that he could have a greater purpose. Whistler took Angel to Los Angeles where he watched from a distance as a young girl named Buffy Summers learned that she was more than a normal girl, that she was the Chosen One. Watching the beautiful young girl take on such a great responsibility inspired Angel and he decided that there was no point in spending the rest of his life feeling sorry for himself. He would try and redeem himself by helping others. He aided Buffy by providing her with important information and fought by her side against the forces of darkness. He and Buffy fell in love but their union would come to break the curse that allowed him to have a soul. Angel experienced a moment of true happiness with Buffy when he made love to her. He temporarily lost himself in her embrace and forgot about what he was and what he had done. He lost his soul and reverted back to the evil Angelus. Angel became Buffy's enemy as he threatened to kill Buffy and all her friends. He murdered Jenny Calendar, a friend of the Scoobies who was also a descendent of the gypsies who had originally cursed him. Before her death, Jenny had discovered the ritual that would once again restore his soul. Willow tried performing the ritual so Buffy would not have to kill Angel. Unfortunately, Angelus had performed a ritual of his own. He awakened the demon Acathla, who had the power to swallow the world into hell. The only way to close the gateway to hell was to plunge a blessed sword into the mouth of the demon, along with the blood of he who opened it. Just as Willow successfully restored Angel's soul, Buffy found herself making the hardest decision of her life. She stabbed Angel through the heart and into the mouth of Acathla. The portal closed and took Angel with it. Buffy had saved the world but at the cost of sending the man that she loved to hell.
With the passing of time going much faster in hell dimensions, Angel spent over a hundred years being tortured until he was finally brought back to Earth by an unknown force. Only a few months had passed in Sunnydale when Buffy found that Angel had returned. He had become traumatized and feral because of the hell dimension, but with Buffy by his side she helped him regain his humanity. Angel was happy that he was back on Earth and that he was back with Buffy, but he came to realize that the two of them could never truly be happy together. He could not risk losing his soul again. And so, Angel left Buffy and went to Los Angeles.
Angel continued his mission to fight the good fight by protecting innocent people from the demons of the night. This was not enough though. Angel had a greater purpose. A man named Doyle came to Angel just as Whistler had, offering him a partnership. Doyle was half demon and had been endowed with the ability to see into the future by a higher force known as The Powers That Be. Doyle believed that it was Angel's duty to help others based on his visions and prevent the worst from happening. Angel agreed to work with Doyle and his first mission led him to run into an old friend from Sunnydale. Cordelia Chase, who had moved to Los Angeles in hopes of beginning a great acting career, believed she could help herself out financially by helping Angel start a business. Though Angel was relunctant, Cordelia helped him form Angel Investigations, a private investigation service that was devoted to "helping the helpless" from the more supernatural things in the world. And so, Angel finally found his place in the world by fighting evil through his P.I. service and through the visions sent by The Powers That Be. Angel would gain other allies in his mission, including Wesley Wyndam Pryce, a former member of the Watcher's Council; and Charles Gunn, a street thug who spent his whole life protecting his neighborhood from vampires and other demons. Unfortunately, Angel also lost an ally when Dolye sacrificed himself to save a race of demon/human hybrids. Doyle managed to pass on his visions to Cordelia who would continue his legacy. Angel and his friends came to be known as Champions, fighting against all forms of evil, including the law firm of Wolfram and Hart. Though ran by humans, Wolfram and Hart is a large organization that opposes the Powers that Be. They follow the orders of the "Senior Partners", and it is their duty to protect, nourish, and promote the advancement of evil through this and all other dimensions and have planned an Armageddon that Angel is prophecized to battle in though it is unclear whose side he will be fighting on. The lawyers at Wolfram and Hart hope to see Angel as Angelus when this Armageddon finally arives. Angel, however, has uncovered a prophecy that says that a vampire with a soul will fight in an apocalypse on the side of good and that he will become human as his reward.
